The American Indians: Mystery and Tradition on the Great Plains, to Unlock and Discover (Treasure Chests)
Published in Paperback by Running Press (August, 1900)
Author: Fiona MacDonald
Average review score:

Fun, educational, diverse activities, creative
The two Treasure Chests I have enjoyed with my nieces are the Great Plains and the Egyptian Mummy. They are both excellent; stimulating and so fun you can't help wanting to learn more. The Mummy was popular on account of embalming the organs and wrapping the body but the Great Plains has more "games" like decorating the tipi and the buzzing wheel. Definitely the beading loom is the best part of either one. The children feel real achievement after completing the projects and I have a wonderful time too. I can't wait to do another one. Perhaps the Vikings.

Becoming and Remaining a People: Native American Religions on the Northern Plains
Published in Hardcover by University of Arizona Press (October, 1995)
Author: Howard L. Harrod
Average review score:

A Thoughtful Book
Howard Harrod's Becoming and Remaining a People: Native American Religions on the Northern Plains argues that the changing of rituals and other aspects of religious practice played a pivotal role in the transformation of the formerly agricultural culture of the Northern Plains into a buffalo culture.

Harrod agrees that the white person's contact with the Native American's had a substantial impact on Native society. He is contending that an exclusive emphasis on contact with the whites can obscure the actions of the Native. Native Americans were not passive spectators to the influx of Europeans; in fact, the Natives actively responded to their changing circumstances ritually as well as politically. This means, that their religious system underwent change that in turn impacted the social structures of Northern Plain culture.

This active change on the part of the Northern Indians is a point of incredible importance. Harrod notes that many of the religious innovations were not seen as a break with tradition. Instead, they were perceived as a development of already existing religious and cultural practices and, thus, continuous with the Northern Plain Native American's social existence. Specifically, these changes could be legitimized by the peoples' visions and dreams. Harrod argues, moreover, that these changes are a testimony to the sheer capability of the Native Americans.

BETWEEN REVEILLE AND TAPS: Life of A Great Plains Drifter
Published in Paperback by Vantage Press (19 December, 2000)
Author: Walter J. Knapp
Average review score:

Louis L'Amour Fans please welcome Walter Knapp
We purchased this book, Between Reveille and Taps at the Braselton Horse Show in April of 2001 from the author himself. My husband is an avid Louis L'Amour fan and has every book he has ever written. I am a history buff and enjoy well written, historically accurate novels. We were charmed to meet this history major who has a true feeling for the REAL West, not the Hollywood version of the West. We were so taken by Mr. Knapp, that we bought the book on the spot. What a wonderful coincidence that was. We both read it and found it to be very entertaining and historically accurate. This book reads from cover to cover in colorful style with a feeling of being right there with Lucas Adams. We could almost feel the dust and wind and the wide opens spaces that Lucas traverses. What really struck me was the complete lack of bias toward either side, the Plains Indians or the military and white settler, with neither being the completely rightous ones. Mr. Knapp just told it like it really was with blunders and victories on both sides. I got a sense of the good and bad on both sides of the various camps, bringing home the truth that wars are not made by ideologies, but by people in all of their prejudices and frailties.

My husband, on the other hand, just loved the feeling of the West. My husband swears he was born 100 years too late in the wrong century. He enjoyed this book for its feeling of being there with Lucas in all of his experiences. He felt that he was a part of Lucas' life, and felt deeply for him in his adventures. He told me that Louis L'Amour fans are going to love this book and all of the ones to come. Since the demise of Louis L'Amour there hasn't been a standout true Western writer with as much heart and soul as Louis. We feel that Walter Knapp has that potential to continue where Louis left off. Kudos to Mr. Knapp for his great storytelling style and his historical accuracy. He won for us, as he appealed to both my husbands and my needs in a Western Book. One day we will be able to say, I met Walter Knapp when he just started! We look forward to many more books in the coming years. Thanks for a well wriiten, intelligent book for any reader.

Black Sunday
"Black Sunday" was a fascinating study of a dust storm of mythic proportions. I enjoyed reading the recollections of the storm from many of the people who experienced it. As I have never lived in the prairie states, I had no idea these "dusters" even existed.
